Tingling and numbness are the common ones that can be experienced by women. Not only women feel uncomfortable, instead, but they also have a question, is something wrong?

Before you jump to some of the causes know what the symptoms have to say. Some of the common symptoms that can be experienced by women include:

  • Feeling like pins and needles, the sensation is lost or burning or tingling sensation is accompanied by pain.
  • An uptick in symptoms when you perform any activity or movement in the body takes place.
  • Present during middle or end of pregnancy, as soon as women gain weight or fluid retention increases the pain begins.

Usually, women do blame hormones and normal bodily changes that are experienced for the sensation of numbness and tingling. As the pregnancy grows, the ability of the body to produce hormone relaxin, increases and this stretches your ligaments during pregnancy and childbirth.

Due to extra relaxin, the posture and center of gravity shifts, and the nerves become pinched, causes sharp pain and tingling sensation down the back, buttocks, and legs can be experienced. Similarly, as the uterus begins to grow, fuller, and heavier, it puts a strain on the muscles, nerves, and ligaments and this contributes to pain.

Cause of numbness in hands and fingers

There is no chance that women might have numbness or tingling sensation in hands or fingers, especially if the pregnancy progresses. This can occur due to excess fluid that adds pressure on the median nerves in the wrist and causes carpal tunnel syndrome.

Meralgia Paresthetica in pregnancy

Women during pregnancy are likely to have numbness and tingling, but as soon as it develops more it is known as Meralgia Paresthetica. This causes pressure on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and these nerves of your thigh get affected.

Symptoms that indicate about it include:

  1. Numbness and burning sensation
  2. Aching and soreness in the thigh
  3. A Sensation like stabbing in the back.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This condition is common in women during pregnancy and because of fluid retention, hormonal fluctuation, and weight gain. A limited number of cases do occur during the last few months, but if you have had the first pregnancy and had carpal tunnel syndrome then the symptoms might affect you stronger.

Symptoms that occur

  • Swelling in the fingers or hand
  • Difficulty grasping object
  • Burring sensation in the hand, arm, or wrist
  • Pain in hand, fingers, and wrist.
  • Numbness in fingers, especially the middle, index, and thumb fingers.

Legs, buttock, and back

During gestation having lower back pain is common and sometimes the pain does occur in your legs and buttocks. The pain gets worse when you put pressure on the nerves. Numbness and tingling in the legs are common and occur due to:

  1. Hormones such as relaxin and causes your ligaments to loosen up.
  2. Fluid retention
  3. Pressure from compressed organs and growing uterus

Weight gain

All of this pressure has an effect on your muscle and makes them weak or strained due to which posture of the body of women do change.

If you experience a change in your posture, then it is usually due to soreness and pain and also, if you perform back-related exercises, you’re likely to get injured.

Hence, women having tingling and numbness during the pregnancy are guided to seek medical help if they find it a bit unusual.
